  • Desert Coming & Seasonals

    John Charles Bennett

    language (, May 17, 2020)
"Desert Coming & Seasonals" is a set of stories and poems speaking of emotional courage and transition to becoming an adult. "Desert Coming" is a set of poems that overlap the natural and supernatural worlds as might have been experienced by Chemehuevi Indians inhabiting the Mohave Desert regions of Southeast California. Inspiration is drawn from tales of Great Elk Spirit, and the Blythe and Rattlesnake Intaglios along the Colorado River. These include a tale of a tribal chief called to lead his tribe to a new homeland, a boy who rescues the moon caught in a battle between giant rams, and a hawk who rescues the "questioning girl" from a snake-witch. The theme of transition is then carried on withthree seasonal stories, two inspired by events in the author's life, and the third by the Dylan Thomas story, "A Child's Christmas in Wales." This eBook is appropriate for young adults and adults alike.

  • A Land of Two Halves : Looking for a Lift in Both New Zealands

    Joe Bennett

Paperback (Gardners Books, Aug. 31, 2004)
After ten years in New Zealand, Joe Bennett asked himself what the hell he was doing there. Other than his dogs, what was it about these two small islands on the edge of the world that had kept him - an otherwise restless traveler - for really much longer than they seemed to deserve? It wasn't the sheep, the hobbits had left, and they could no longer claim the best rugby team in the world - what else was there? Bennett thought he'd better pack his bag and find out. Hitching around both the intriguingly named North and South Islands, with an eye for oddity and a taste for beer, Bennett began to remind himself of the reasons New Zealand is quietly seducing the rest of the world.
